Duties / Job description: This is a professional library position with responsibility for planning and implementing a statewide education and training program, and coordinating all related continuing educational opportunities for South Carolina public libraries. This position works as part of the Library Development team of consultants to coordinate planning and development of public library services.

The CE Consultant will conduct a library learning needs analysis of the South Carolina public library community including Directors, Trustees, and library staff. Will investigate and select models for the elements of an up-to-date statewide library learning plan, providing high quality learning events for public library professionals and library support staff, including opportunities for mentorships and internships. Will conduct evaluative activities to gauge effectiveness. Will assist in developing an annual Public Library Management Institute to foster a new generation of library leaders.

The CE Consultant will also research options for creating for-credit programs and sequential basic library skills curriculum for non-MLIS personnel in public libraries, integrating the core competencies for library practitioners and 21st Century Skills concepts. Will develop incentives for participation in learning opportunities, including recognition of learning achievements of individuals and institutions. Will oversee the State Library’s Intern program, coordinating with USC’s SLIS and other programs as appropriate. Will serve as SCSL’s liaison to identified digital learning initiatives and other national and state Continuing Education forums.

Qualifications: MLIS from an ALA-accredited university. A minimum of three years professional library experience is required; four years of experience preferred with a minimum of two years in a public library setting with growing levels of responsibility, particularly in training and staff development.
A responsible, independent self-starter, the successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of public library issues, practices, trends, and library organizational issues and work relationships. The candidate will be familiar with the principles and practices of an up-to-date library staff development program, and will be able to apply that knowledge to the design and implementation of a statewide program, including curriculum selection, development of training modules and workshops, scheduling, promotional efforts, assessment and evaluation, and reporting. Excellent oral and writing skills and extensive use and understanding of scheduling products and productivity software including spreadsheets. The successful candidate will have a high level of comfort and knowledge with both traditional classroom and online/digital training environments. Excellent communication, group facilitation, and presentation are required.

Salary Range: $37,945- $53,000
